This pack contains a pheromone lure of Tuta absoluta (Tomato Leaf Miner), a highly destructive pest of tomato and other solanaceous crops. The lure is designed for use in delta or water traps to effectively monitor pest population and support timely pest management decisions. Early detection using pheromone traps helps reduce severe crop losses and minimizes dependence on chemical pesticides.
Nature of Damage
Tuta absoluta is one of the most damaging pests in tomato cultivation, capable of causing up to 100% yield loss if not managed properly. The larvae feed aggressively on plant tissues, creating mines or galleries in leaves, boring into stems, and damaging both green and ripe fruits. They also attack apical buds, affecting plant growth and development. Since the larvae remain protected inside plant tissues, chemical control becomes less effective. Additionally, the pest develops resistance quickly, making management more challenging.
Life Cycle
Tuta absoluta is a small moth with high reproductive capacity and rapid multiplication. Its life cycle includes four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult, completed within 30–35 days under favorable conditions. Eggs are small, creamy white to yellow, and laid mostly on the underside of leaves. They hatch within 4–6 days. The larvae are cream to light pink with a dark head and pass through four stages, causing maximum damage over a period of 12–15 days. Mature larvae drop to the soil using a silken thread and pupate either in the soil or occasionally on plant parts. The pupal stage lasts about 5 days. Adults are small (5–7 mm), brownish with characteristic black spots on wings, and are active during night. A single female can lay up to 260 eggs. In favorable conditions, 8–10 generations may occur in a year.
