This pack contains a pheromone lure of Spodoptera frugiperda (Fall Armyworm), a highly destructive and invasive pest affecting maize, sugarcane, rice, sorghum and many other crops. The lure is used with funnel traps to monitor pest population and enable timely control measures. Early detection helps reduce crop damage and supports effective pest management.
Identification
Eggs are initially pale green or white and later turn brown before hatching within 2–3 days. They are usually laid in clusters and covered with protective scales. The larvae pass through six stages. Young larvae are light-colored, while older larvae turn brown to greenish with distinct markings. Key identification features include three yellow stripes on the back, a dark head with a characteristic inverted “Y” marking, and four dark spots arranged in a square on the second last body segment. The pupae are dark brown and found in the soil. Adult moths have a wingspan of 3–4 cm, with dark brown forewings and grey-white hind wings.
Life Cycle & Nature of Damage
Female moths lay about 100–200 eggs on the underside of leaves, usually near the base of plants. After hatching, young larvae feed on leaf surfaces, creating transparent patches known as “windowing.” As they grow, larvae move into the leaf whorl, where they cause severe damage by creating ragged holes and feeding on developing plant parts. In young plants, feeding may destroy the growing point, preventing proper plant development.
Larvae are most active at night and produce large amounts of frass (waste), which looks like sawdust. Older larvae may show cannibalistic behavior, reducing their population naturally. After about two weeks, mature larvae drop to the soil and pupate at a depth of 2–8 cm. Adult moths emerge within 8–14 days and continue the cycle. The pest spreads rapidly and can cause significant yield losses if not managed in time.
