This pack contains one pheromone lure of Bactrocera dorsalis (Oriental Fruit Fly), designed for use in fruit fly traps to monitor and manage fruit fly infestation in horticultural crops. The lure attracts adult flies into the trap, enabling early detection and timely pest control, which helps reduce crop losses and improve fruit quality.
Identification
The adult fly is larger than a common housefly, with a body length of about 8 mm and transparent (hyaline) wings. Its body shows distinct yellow and dark brown to black markings on the thorax. The abdomen typically has two horizontal black stripes along with a central longitudinal stripe, often forming a “T-shaped” pattern, though this may vary. The ovipositor is long, slender, and sharply pointed.
Life Cycle
Under warm conditions, the life cycle from egg to adult takes around 16 days. After hatching, larvae feed inside fruits and, once mature, emerge and drop to the soil to pupate. Pupation occurs in the soil, forming a brown-colored puparium. Adult flies become sexually mature within about 9 days after emergence. A single female can lay 1,200 to 1,500 eggs under field conditions (and even more under ideal conditions). While ripe fruits are preferred for egg laying, immature fruits can also be attacked. Cooler weather may extend the life cycle duration.
Nature of Damage
The larvae cause serious damage by feeding inside fruits, leading to internal rotting and tissue breakdown. Infested fruits often show water-soaked patches, become soft, and lose market value. Young fruits may become deformed and drop prematurely. Larval feeding tunnels allow entry of bacteria and fungi, accelerating decay. Even low infestation levels can reduce fruit quality due to punctures and internal damage.
Target Crops
Grapes, Pomegranate, Mango, Sapota, Sweet orange, Mandarin orange, Lemon, Guava, Fig, Papaya and other fruit crops.
